Located in Central Otago, the world's southernmost winemaking region, Akarua was established in 1996 by long-time Otago icon Sir Clifford Skeggs and first vintage three years later. The region is mountainous, rising to over 2,000 metres and the vines are planted amidst spectacular alpine scenery. Our philosophy is to reflect the special and unique characters of the Bannockburn sub-region's terroir, and capture the qualities of each vintage so that they are truly reflected in each bottle that you taste. Our wines make an impression... Akarua Pinot Noir, noted for its density and flavour concentration, has taken many awards including Wine of the Show at the 2003 Air New Zealand Awards. It is a supreme accolade with 'Holy Grail' status and the Akarua Team is incredibly proud of this achievement. Situated alongside the Akarua Winery complex is the LazyDog Cafe and Wine Bar. The LazyDog Café and new look wine bar includes a space for the kids; providing a relaxed environment inside or outside in the garden courtyardso come on over and enjoy a break with us.
