Carlile McLean was founded in 1874 when James Carlile commenced practice. In 1881 he was joined in partnership by Patrick McLean. The firm was thus one of the oldest in Hawkes Bay and could trace its history under the one name from the earliest days of settlement. Dowling Co was formed more recently as a result of a merger in 1980 between the well established Dowling Wacher Co and Peach, Sturm, Prescott Jamieson.
