  • Product list: Christian Resource Centre is part of the New Zealand Sunday School Union that has been in existence since the 1860s. How the Auckland Sunday School Union came into being. In the 1860s the Wellesley Street Baptist Church (now the Tabernacle) was advised that there were undelivered packages for "Superintendent, Sunday School,New Zealand ." The packages were given to the Baptist Church . The parcels turned out to be reports sent out each year by the London Sunday School Union. The reports were read keenly and it sparked the idea of uniting people engaged in Sunday school work in Auckland . By 1864 Sunday School teacher's meetings in Auckland were discussing the idea of forming a group or union. Six schools agreed to go ahead and in 1865 the Sunday School Union was launched and underway. The Objects of the Union . The objects of the Union were to promote a spirit of unity amongst Sunday School teachers and thereby to extend the usefulness of Sunday Schools; to provide a depot for Bibles, books and tracts, etc; to assist the formation of Sunday Schools to try to spread useful knowledge amongst the young." The above is copied from an article in "The Sun" September 24 1927. The Auckland Sunday School Union trained teachers and operated a travelling school as well as selling Bibles and Christian books.
