Dave Schafer has been in game for over 30 years - and began after serving an instruments apprenticeship within the Naval dockyard in Devonport. Dave has extensive experience, repairing instruments on the round-the-world boats, army, police, and from lasers to supertankers. So whats a typical job? There's no real pattern, it seems, but sun damage is common. "many compasses are from boats up in the Islands.""they have been left uncovered for ong periods, and the acrylic or Perspex dome has melted, and the fluid has disappeared. Repairing it requires a new dome, refilling and re-swinging - and selling the owner a sun-cover." More extensive repairs involve the actual mechanical components of the compass. Cleaning, rebuilding, rescaling, replacing glass, even brazing. And the older the compass, the more difficult it is to find replacement parts.
