- Product list: Waihi is an historical gold mining town. The Golden Cross Family Hotel was one of the original pubs relocated from the Golden Cross Mine to Waihi Township. It has recently been refurbished and offers friendly lounge bar, garden bar, restaurant and accommodation. Waihi is also known for its support of the arts. See local art works, including surreal street sculptures. The Golden Cross Family Hotel is right on the crossroads to Waihi Beach and Tauranga, Whangamata and Tairua, and nearby Paeroa. . Waihi Beach is ten minutes down the road, no better place to chill out, to sun bathe (a little at a time is OK, they say). The Bay of Plenty has some beautiful beaches and Waihi is no exception. If you are into fishing, kontiki or by boat, this is the place. Mayor Island is straight off the beach in deep sea fishing waters. Cathy and Simon are back in New Zealand with their family, and have completely refurbished the interior. They now offer clean spacious rooms, communal kitchen, dining and lounge, especially suited for back-packers and families. The Cross Roads Restaurant, within the Golden Cross Family Hotel, is open 11am to 2pm and 6pm to 9pm, phone 07 863 6306. The acrylic painting to the right is by Simon, proprietor. It is based on an old faded print of the original Golden Cross Hotel, as it was at the Golden Cross Mine. The Hotel has been extended, but much of the original wood remains. The history is still very much there. And the recent renovations have enhanced the spaciousness of the grand old building. Simon, Cathy and family extend a warm welcome to all visitors. The new pool table and the wide screen TV occupy a corner of the large and friendly lounge bar. Pool is open to all comers and tournaments by arrangement with management. A special area is set aside for pokie lovers. They are discreetly located and volume is down so as not to disturb other patrons. Locals love the friendly, family atmosphere.
