Judged as the best emerging event of 2006, and only in its second year, the NZ Body Art Awards is fast establishing itself on our national arts calendar. Art will be brought to walking, talking, crawling, creeping and dancing life at the North Shore Events Centre on Saturday 14 June 7.30pm, for the third annual New Zealand Body Art Awards. The young event boasts more then 70 entrants over nine categories and features some of the premiere local maestros in one of the worldâs oldest arts. The categories include hand painted, special effects, tribal, fluorescent and masquerade. Winners get prizes of $1,000 and original trophies designed by Weta Workshops. There is also an award for the best performance from a model which includes $500 cash, a night in at the Spenser on Byron. But the awards arenât all for the entrants, with audience members encouraged to join the fun and dress up to get the chance to win spot prizes. The New Zealand Body Art Awards founded by passionate body artist Mem Bourke, began running body painting contests at Glenfield Tavern. The national competition is designed to foster the art and give exposure to artists. She believes the event will grow to be a hallmark on New Zealandâs arts calendar, saying the talent and creativity of New Zealand artists is phenomenal. Among the judges is Richard Taylor of Weta Workshops, who has contacted organizers saying he wants to be onboard. Gino Acevendo is another judge the artists will aim to impress as they seek work in the tough special effects industry along with David Minifies of Minifes MakeUp and Elizabeth Osborn from TopMark . Body art creations can take up to eight hours of hard work.
