They took advantage of Nelson's extraordinary sunshine to develop market gardens and quickly added their own flavour to the cities cultural life. In 2005, Stefano Bonazza left a highly successful Italian Restaurant near Venice to take the very newest of Italian cuisine to New Zealand. Like many of his countrymen he chose Nelson - for its climate and for the magnificent variety of fresh vegetables and seafood on its doorstep. His relatives still run the Venice Restaurant (La Osteria), and give Stefano the inside track on the best Italian suppliers as well as whats hot on the local menus. Stefano established his Italian Restaurant "Venice Cove" in Nelsons prime waterfront location, a spacious second floor premises within the Nelson Yacht Club building. This amazing location provides sweeping views in first row across Nelson Harbour and Tasman Bay, and is within metres of the shipping lanes, offering a startling view of ships entering and leaving port.
